Questions and Answers about the Media Center...


When is the Media Center open?
The Media Center is open Monday through Friday from 7:50 am until 3:30 pm. The Media Center is open during all 3 lunch periods.

Does the Media Center have rules?

 Yes!

1.  Follow directions.

2.  You must have a hall pass and it must be signed correctly.

3.  No eating or drinking in the Media Center.

4.  Talk in low tones.

5.  Follow rules and regulations of BLHS.

Consequences:

1.  Verbal warning

2.  Demerits

3.  Dismissal from Media Center

4.  Office

Do I have to have a pass when I come to the Media Center?
You do not need a hall pass before school, during your lunch period, or after school. However, you must have a properly signed hall pass if you come to the Media Center at any other time.

How do I get my ID made?
IDs are made in the Media Center all during the year. The first ID is free and will be made during the first or second week of school.  Replacements will be $5.00.  A new ID will be issued at the beginning of each school year.  All students must wear their IDs at all times.

Can I use the Internet whenever I want?
The Internet is for academic use only. We do allow students to check their e-mail and surf appropriate sites on their own time (at break, during lunches, and after school).  Any student who misuses the Internet will have his or her privileges revoked for the remainder of the school year.  Students must have an Internet permission form on file which indicates that parents have given permission to use the Internet...this is a district policy!

How long can I keep my books?
Fiction and nonfiction books are checked out for 2 weeks.
Classroom set books are checked out for 4 weeks.
Videotapes are checked out overnight. Audiobooks are checked out for 1 week.
 Magazines are checked out for 1 week...current issues are not checked out.
Reference books are not checked out.

Do you charge for overdue materials?
Yes.
Books and magazines are $.05 per day.
Videotapes and audiobooks are $.25 per day.
We do not charge for weekends and holidays.

May I check out a reference book?
No. Due to the high cost of reference materials, we do not allow them to be checked out.

Does it cost to print from the computers?
Yes.
It is $.10 per page for black and white.
It is $.25 per page for color.

Is there a copy machine available in the Media Center?
Yes, we do have a black and white copy machine available in the Media Center. It is $.10 per page for copies.

What if I don't have money?
Please make every effort to bring money with you when you are coming in for research. Unless you are a great notetaker, there will probably be things you want to print or copy. We do not accept IOUs!

Do you sell supplies?
We do have a limited number of supplies that you can purchase.
Pencils...$.10 each
Paper folders with pockets...$.25 each
Plastic slide covers...$.35 each
3x5 index cards...$.01 each (limit of 25)
Construction paper...$.05 per sheet

Do you have a letter-cutting machine?
Yes, the Media Center has an Ellison letter-cutting machine. We have dies for 2-inch and 4-inch letters and numbers. Please take advantage of this when completing your projects, especially science fair projects! There is no charge if you have your own construction paper. If you need to buy construction paper from the Media Center it is $.05 per sheet.  You can get four 4-inch letters from one sheet of construction paper, and between 9 and 12 of the 2-inch letters from one sheet.

How many books can I check out at one time?
You may check out two books at a time. Students who have not cleared up their account from previous years and still have books out will not be allowed to check out any others.  Please keep up with your books and turn them in on time!  We do not want to have to tell you "no" when you come to get a book!

Do I have to have my ID to check out a book?
Yes!  All students are required to wear their IDs, so you should always have it with you.

What if I need to stay later than 3:30 for a project I'm working on?
All you need to do is talk to me (Mrs. Derrick) ahead of time so that arrangements can be made. I'll be happy to stay later, but please talk to me a few days ahead to be sure that I don't have an appointment on the day you want to stay late. Don't wait until the day you want to stay to ask me about it!

May I come out of another teacher's class to do work for someone else?
No, you may only come out of the teacher's class for whom you are doing the work. The only exception to this is if you are in Driver Education. This is considered a study hall when you are not driving, therefore, you would be allowed to come to the Media Center to do work for any teacher. You may also use the morning Academic Assistance time to work on any project.
